seat heater problem

Im rather new to the site, but i am familiar with forum equity( thats not the right word is it) and tried to search for this topic with no results.
Ok so i own a 1990 740 GLE. The seat heater worked last year but now it seems not. I checked the fuse and it looks ok. Its a manual seat, just wondering on tips on how to remove and change the heater and how hard it is. Thank you

I think possibly etiquette, but what's in a word? You did the search first.

Before going into the long winded detail of replacing the seat heater is this both heaters or only one? What was the ambient temperature as the heaters are thermostatically controlled? They will switch on at 50F (10C) and off at 95F (35C).

Another check you need to do before ripping the car apart is to see if you have 12 volts at the plugs going to the heaters. On the driver's seat this is the blue wire and on the passenger's it is the white wire.

lol thanks that was the word, i was tired last night, i just couldnt think of it.

Its only on the passanger side. And i just started the car and it was rather cool probably around 10 degrees or lower. Its geting chilly down here in Toronto now. I havent tried the driver side yet to see if it works. I havent drove the car today actually. Do you think it could be just the wires then?

I have known instances where careless feet have pulled the plugs off under the seat.

With any electrical gadget my first check is to see if the required voltage is actually getting there. You could have a bad connection at the switch or at the plug. If it is something simple you can save yourself a lot of work.

Its geting chilly down here in Toronto now

We have friends in Elliot Lake and they told us about similar temps a couple of weeks ago.

ok ic , wise words.. i will check the wiring to see if it all looks ok. but i mean how do i check if the wire is getting voltage from the switch. Would a trouble light do the trick? you know those lights that look like a screwdriver n come with a bulb and a clip

I use a multimeter but that test probe would do it provided the lead to the clip is long enough to reach a good earth (ground). If you can't find one try the screw in the bottom of the box between the seats.

If you do have 12 volts at the plug it still does not mean that the heater pads are faulty. There is a thermostat in the seat which would need to be checked first.
