Mark, I hope your dealer is an honest one....the one near our house seems to be more recently but in past years was not, so make sure to get second opinions on stuff they say needs fixing from a reputable independent who knows these cars. Our dealer would often recommend things not needed just to line his pockets. Anyway, the typhoon deal you speak of between your air box and turbo is bunk...will do nothing- don't waste your $$. I think that paper air filters are fine. I think there are to many horror stories about the K&N. I personally use them in all of my cars with no problem. I figure a bit more stuff might get through but will burn up as well. The main thing is to do the maintenance on schedule and find things that you can do preventatively so you don't have big bills come your way. Good luck with your Volvo!

Nice work on the procedure. I am going to buy the parts and give it a try--thanks
Thanks to all for clear instructions and info on where to procure the gears. I just finished the job and odometer and trip indicator work like a champ. Couple of comments on my experience:
1. I did crack the molding piece by the windshield upon re-assembly. In retrospect complete removal of the dash cover might have been cleaner but I was reluctant to mess with the airbag.
2. Last night I noticed that one of the 3w bulbs is out (rats). Either I jarred it loose or it's burned out. Bottom line: back in I go.
3. I don't know how to retrieve the lost miles from the OBD computer. I have a '96 that doesn't have the box with the "fly lead" by the windshield washer reservoir.
Thanks again to all. This is a great site for diy.

PS I forgot to re-insert the service due lamp, pity.

Those three Watt (W3W) lamps are available cheap at any auto parts store. I would replace them all. If you don't another one will surely burn out within the month.
I'm fairly certain that a dealer can yank the true mileage, I have no idea what they would charge for the 3 minutes that it would take.

This is an old thread. I actually used it to repair my odometer last year. It is very well documented. Be sure to follow it to the letter.
Everyone else is throwing in their .02... So, here is mine. Pay particular attention to how the "0" the odometer before you begin. Especially if you have to add mileage to "catch the odometer up" to the computer.
I was not really paying attention when I did the job and the trip meter wound up coming around on the 1 or the 9 instead of the 0 (can't remember which). There is a write up about this towards the end of the fix and at the end of the original thread.
I had to remove it all again to fix the problem. No biggie. Just more of a chance of breaking something having to do it 2 times.

This was very good help. Common sense and a little mechanical expertise required. There is a piece of tape on the tach side of the cover: it looks like it's there to show if the cover has been opened... tamper seal? If yours is a turbo you need to remove the 8mm nut and washer on the back of the gauge. A deep socket works well. Great write up! No hammer is required.
Thanks for this thread. I did not remove the entire dashboard cover, but wish I had, as the strain of pulling up on the left side to remove instrument cluster bent the dashboard where it curves down between the central heat ducts and the glove compartment. I note that someone suggested removing the entire only needed a bit more work than the left-end only method. Perhaps someone could document those extra needed steps? Many thanks to all. I love my Volvo and enjoy keeping it on the road at minimum cost.
Ricktt:
You commented, "If yours is a turbo you need to remove the 8mm nut and washer on the back of the gauge." I did not see this step on the AWDOF (Amazingly well documented ...) -- can you explain why this is necessary? Thanks.
