Reverse intercooler piping

I feel dumb asking but I'm new to the turbo world so what exactly is reverse intercooler piping and what are it's gains?

The stock turbo feeds the intercooler on the bottom and retrieves the air from the top. Heat rises so the theory is that a performance gain can be obtained by retrieving the air from the bottom of the intercooler where it should be cooler.

In practice I honestly think the gains can be attributed to the fact that the piping length is shorter and the turbo is a little more responsive.
