s40 all round vibration

Post by s40alk »

Hi,

I am experiencing a medium strength vibration at 75 to 80 mph. First I can feel it through the steering then the whole car seems to vibrate. Above 85 - 90 it calms down again. The car is 1999 1.6i model with 95k miles on the clock.

On Volvo's advice I had all 4 wheels balanced but it did not help. The car has 4 new tyres and the wheels look straight with no obvious damage.

Previous history is, it has taken quite a heavy hit to the driver side front and rear wheels, enough to bend both alloys, when I hit a huge pot hole. Both wheels have been replaced since then.

The car drives very smooth and quiet at all other speeds. No vib or noise at all.

Could this be suspension damage or the axels being bent? Wouldn

Hi

Okay, so balance problems are ruled out, I wonder if it could be a loose hub nut? or slightly egg shaped wheel, it's a difficult one. Good luck.

Could be a failed engine mount. We experienced vibration above 65 MPH... turns out it was a broken engine mount that was fixable under warranty... car has 59,500 miles.

I had kind of the same problem on my 1999.5 S40. The cause was a bent axle. Although in my case the vibration will start at a lower speed (45-50) and go away at 64-70.
Nobody could explain how could this happen. Since this a a cheap and poor quality car, I ended up buying an used axle from a website that specilaizes in selling used Volvo parts. I saved my self a lot of money.
