Excessive clatter on start after sitting using Mann filter

Post by wheelsup »

I'm getting the excessive clattering/chattering on startup after the car sits for a day or so, but I've switched to a Mann filter and the problem persists. Any thoughts as to why? It's been bothering me, at first I was going to ignore it but I've used generic filters for 50,000 miles (didn't know, just went to Jiffy Lube)) so my guess is I might of damaged something? Anything I can do?

Engine sounds good after warming up, maybe a slight tapping every now and then but mostly quiet. I'm using 10w-30.

Here's what it sounds like:

I posted that about a year ago on another site, was told it was normal but thought it was "normal" cause I was using a generic filter. Also on the oil filter screw, as it connects to the engine, mine was lose, I made it hand tight before installing the filter. Thoughts? No books I had mentioned it. I'm embarssed to admit it but that was my first ever oil change that I myself did :).

What is an oil filter screw?
It doesn't sound horrible like I was expecting.

That doesn't sound all that bad, my son's '96 sounds about the same. I have a 30750383 lower sump O ring kit and a tube of Curil K2 sealer on the shelf above my desk to deal with it whenever he can break away from his girlfriend long enough to do it. When it comes to his car for the most part I instruct and he wrenches - tough love but at least he will understand how they work and hopefully be able to fix them.

New oil pan O rings should fix you right up.

LOL I'm not up on the jargon, sorry! :) If my memory serves me correctly where you screw the filter into the block of the engine there was a metal tube hanging down with threads...that was lose and I could turn it.

Thanks Ozark so that will fix the sound on STARTUP? Right after it fires off? How so? I was thinking fixing the o rings would fix the sound after it's been running but no? Also is that procedure pretty straight forward? If I remember there were bolts holding the oil pan on around all sides, just basically remove those, the pan comes off, and the o-rings go into the sump pickup?

I just did an oil change so maybe I will wait another 2500 miles or so when that oil needs to come out, it's been like that for awhile so I doubt another 3 months will ruin the car, sounds like it's not too urgent.

Looks like I will need to order:

I wish I had a dad like you sometimes! We would just bring it to a shop. He grew up on a farm and I think got tired of fixing things. I'm trying to learn little by little, at least the Volvo is fairly easy to work on (so far at least).

My 850 with 362,000 km makes the same sound if sitting for a day, and goes away about as quickly. As Lee says, the O-ring kit for the sump is the most likely cure. Never use generic filters on anything again. My Nissan and Wifey's Hyundai both have that valve inside, and most of the generics don't, or they don't make one as well-built as the OEM filters. Hyundai has a technical service bulletin all about the use of aftermarket filters and the oil-starvation damage that it does to the engine.

OK reading thru here it sounds like using the Mann filters should fix the problem on startup, but right after startup if there is still a sound that is where the o-rings would need to be replaced? I guess what I am asking is how could new o-rings hold the oil "up" in the system before start?

Here, I found your post:
Wheelsup,

That is exactly the noise from an oil filter without a check valve. As far as long term damage goes, I don't know. It would obviously be better for the top of the engine to have oil on startup.

So I put a Mann on there, and still get this noise? I'm confused! :?:

With age the oil pickup in the bottom of the sump starts to let air in (worn o-ring) thus at idle (just starting the car) you get some oil starvation. This, coupled with some wear at the top end from oil starvation could create the chatter. As the car warms and you drive it, naturally the RPM's increase, so even if some air gets sucked up with the oil, at least you have a steady flow of oil on top- thus the decrease in sound. Hope this all makes sense to you now.

+1

It is all about keeping the oil on the top of the engine. Without the check valve in the oil filter or with a crappy check valve on the oil filter it will drain immediately. With bad O rings it just drains a little slower.

That gravity thing comes into play.
