Re: Bulbs, bulbs, bulbs...interior bulbs.

Post by sryme »

Can anyone help with this problem I'm having with interior lights on my '96 850 Turbo? My passenger side interior light (the one located inside the module where the sunroof motor is located) 'went out'. When I popped the light cover off, the bulb fell out. Thinking it wasn't really 'out', I pushed the bulb back in its holder, turned 1/4 turn, and now NONE of the interior lights (front or back) work and I have a constant chime. To get rid of the chime, I had to turn the interior light switch to the 0 position.

Any suggestions???? I would replace the entire module with one from a junkyard but the fact the rear lights are out too confuses me.

Check fuses 3, 6, 10 and 15, replace as necessary and it should get rid of the chime.

Ok another bulb that should be included in the list is the transmission indicator bulb. Didn't see any posts in this thread or others on it, and it would probably fit in here. Also works out that I need to do mine and would like some pointers on how to access it. Anyone got a good link to instructions so I don't crack the wood on the center console trying to figure it out?

Solutech did a good writeup in this thread:

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?p=52763

It is a right hand drive car but the basics are the same.

The lamp itself is unique and expensive. I use a Dremmel tool to cut the leads off of the old lamp and solder in a Radio Shack 272-1092 back into the socket. The same style lamp illuminates the cigarette lighter ring.

Thanks Lee, and now for my final question since I will be in there replacing the rest of the bunk lights, I have been looking for this one too, is there a thread on replacing the E-W-S transmission mode control switch lighting as well? If we can get this then I think we would have all the bulbs in the dash and center console all on this one thread (as long as the SS link doesn't move)

I looked it up in VADIS and they don't show a lamp in that switch. I can't recall whether mine is illuminated or not. Some of the switches - the Info switch for example - have the lamp soldered in place inside of the switch and it is necessary to take the switch apart to replace it. All of the older, Pre-95, switches were made that way. I have taken a few of them apart to replace the lamps but it is not a procedure I would recommend for everyone. The entire switch falls apart and springs go flying. They are a challenge to get back together.

I have a spare switch with a slightly broken cover I might go ahead and pull apart tonight. Will post pics and info if I find anything. Would make sense that it would light up, though I have to admit, I have never seen one that was functioning

Mine functions but then again I have an S70 and not an 850...they could be made differently...still the same 3 transmission selector buttons. They did away with this a year later for the '99 model that was just left with the "W" switch.

Just an update, got my tranny mode switch disassembled, and at least on a 96 850 Turbo the only lights in the switch are the green and orange LED's to indicate the chosen mode. Bummer, would look great lit up
