95 Volvo 940 wagon

Post by trender »

recently had low speed front end collision from ice on bridge.
Air bags deployed and destroyed windshield, also some front end minimal damage.
I like this car, only had it for a year and it is my first volvo.

My main question is that nothing mechanical seems wrong, and turning the key offers nothing. I figure its related to emergency cutoff feature of impact and air bag deployment. Is this true? and if so what can I do to get it started as its dead in my driveway...

Thanks,
trender

Welcome to MVS.
I really know nothing about these cars and I'm sure billofdurham will chime in later but from what I understand, your assumption does indeed seem to be correct about the crash sensor...it may need replacing (or resetting?) in order for you to be able to turn your car on again....it is #4 in the picture below (door ceil area):

Some cars will have an "inertia switch", but it should only cut off power to the fuel system. Although, it probably is a bit different on the Volvos.

Usually after the airbags deploy the engine can still be started and, as far as I know, there is no inertia switch fitted. There is a rollover switch to stop the fuel but that should not have activated in this case.

Check fuse #1 as it covers the main fuel pump and the engine control systems.

The crash sensor is located under the driver's seat.

Obviously in a collision where airbags have deployed fault codes will have set and the SRS light will be on.

You can do a check for and clear SRS fault codes on 1993+ 940s and 960s using the On-Board Diagnostic system in the engine compartment.

Faults can occur in components such as airbags, seat belt tensioners, and the sensor unit or in their associated wiring circuits. A fault is indicated by the SRS lamp in the instrument panel, which remains "on" until the fault has been remedied and the OBD system cleared.

The OBD output boxes are on the left side strut tower and are labelled "A" and "B". Box "A" has the probe, the test button, and the LED readout.

Remove the selector lead from the side of "A" and insert it into terminal 5 of output box "B".
Turn the ignition "on" to key position II.
Wait about ten seconds.Press the button on box "A". Keep it pressed for about 1 second.
Read off the LED flashes. Codes have three digits: A-B-C. If code 1-1-1 is read, there are no stored fault codes. If a code other than 1-1-1 is obtained, write it down and press the button again to see if there are more. When the first code recurs, all codes have been read.

Code Fault
1-1-1 OK: No faults detected in the OBD system
1-1-2 Internal fault in the sensor unit
1-2-7 SRS lamp, short circuit or break in circuit
2-1-1 Steering wheel module, short circuit in wiring
2-1-2 Steering wheel module, break in wiring
2-1-3 Steering wheel module, short circuit to ground
2-1-4 Steering wheel module, short circuit to +12V
2-2-1 Passenger module, short circuit in wiring
2-2-2 Passenger module, break in wiring
2-2-3 Passenger module, short circuit to ground
2-2-4 Passenger module, short circuit to +12V
2-3-1 Seat belt tensioner left, short circuit in wiring
2-3-2 Seat belt tensioner left, break in wiring
2-3-3 Seat belt tensioner left, short circuit to ground
2-3-4 Seat belt tensioner left, short circuit to +12V
2-4-1 Seat belt tensioner right, short circuit in wiring
2-4-2 Seat belt tensioner right, break in wiring
2-4-3 Seat belt tensioner right, short circuit to ground
2-4-4 Seat belt tensioner right, short circuit to +12V

To clear fault codes:

Remember to read the codes three times before clearing.
Remove the selector lead from the side of "A" and insert it into terminal 5 of output box "B".
Turn the ignition "on" to key position II.
Press the button on box "A". Keep it pressed for at least 5 seconds.
Release the button. The LED lights.
Press the button again when the LED lights and keep it pressed for at least 5 seconds.
The codes should now be cleared. If they persist then remedial action needs to be taken.

If you need more help, ask.

Bill.

We struggled to get power at all, even with charger helping. After fiddling with battery and reinstalling and tightening connections, it showed signs of potential life. I am Getting new battery in morning then will see where I stand.

Good news - wanted to turnover, without any specific resetting or repair work being done.

Bad news - driver and pass. safety belts locked up tight, apparently they lock up as safety feature with airbag deployment. Are these repairable or require full replacement?

More when I knowit, Thanks,
Trender

Hopefully you will get it going again without too much trouble.

This is an extract from VADIS on the subject of the SRS deployment:
