Fan blower, indicators, hazard and aircon failure

Post by andyjr »

I was driving along last night when all of a sudden my heater fan blower stopped working, along with my indicators, hazard lights and air con (which relies on the fan blower working I think). I checked with my nearest Volvo dealer and they said it could be one of the 40 amp fuses under the bonnet. I checked these but they are all fine. I had my local garage look at it and they managed to get the indicators working by turning on the hazard lights (which don't flash) but the indicators work.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour ?

My car is an S40 SX 1999

Thanks

Andy

I had my fan blower and ac go out yesterday in my '01 S40 also. My indicator lights and hazard lights are still working fine. I checked the fuse box and all fuses are still intact.
the lights for my blower/ac are working but when I turn all the knobs nothing happens. When I turn the knob to change where the air blows to (the floor, face, windshield) I can hear the mechanism moving, but when I turn the knob that turns the air higher and lower nothing happens. also when I turn the temperature dial nothing happens either.
I am lost for what I need to do. I don't really have money to take it to the dealership or anything to get looked at and fixed and I would much rather fix the problem myself anyway. So if anyone has any suggestions....

A common problem on the S/V40 is the heater motor resistor which shows itself in many ways - no blow at all or fast speed only or slow speed only.

This is located on the blower motor under the passenger side dashboard and requires very little work to replace.

Disconnect the battery negative cable having found your radio code first.

Remove the soundproofing under the glove box and you will see the blower motor. The resistor is attached to the side with a screw. Remove the screw and disconnect the leads.

Apparently the resistor is not very expensive at a Volvo dealer and labour time should be no more than 1/2 an hour.
