1994 960 Valve Cover Gasket Replacement?

Post by 0hi0 »

I just bought this car for 3 grand off of a buddy and the only thing I've noticed wrong is the Valve cover leaks oil which turns into a whistle if you drive the car for over a couple hours.

I was thinking no problem, three hour job at most. Went to the dealer to get a gasket and they told me it was a tough job and should be done by there techs. Call me stupid but what's so special about it? I thought I'd just pull the cover, scape off the old stuff, clean it up, lay down some liquid gasket, put it back together, torque to 12 n pounds and be done with it...

Help please, I was going to do it tomorrow!

This is a lot more work than it looks like. That cover isn't just a cover, it is also the bearing caps for the cams and oil passages for the lifters. You will need to remove the cam position sensor on the back of the head. When you remove and install the bolts on the cover it must be clamped down becouse of the force of the valve springs pushing up. You may also crack the edge of the cover. You must use a special tool to lock the cams when you remove the t-belt and whatch those sprockets, they are not keyed and can go on in 3 ways +adjustable slot. Come to think of it, maby a shop should do it for you. I can tell you more but it is kinda a bear.
If its broke fix it. If its not broke don't fix it. If your broke join the club.
