S80 1999 Known Problems?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 1999 Known Problems?

Post by HareBall »

I am looking at buying an S80 to replace my 97 850GLT and was wondering about know problems with them.
I found a 1999 S80 T6 and the asking price is $4500. It has 170,000 miles on it. It is a one owner. The only things I have noticed wrong with it are the drivers door switches are recessed for some reason and under the hood one of the strut tower covers is torn. Also the radio was not working and I couldn't figure out how to get it to quit asking for a CD. It said load CD on the the display.
Any other things I need to look for?

You know my opinion on this model year S80...I would avoid it. Price seem awfully high too for something with that many miles and of that age. Have you looked at Craigslist for k-ville?

^^^ agree with MIJ. Be careful with early S80s. Read my posts here about my dad's '99 S80.

The first S80 I owned was a wonderful car. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. We were the second owners from a doctor in Morristown. That car, however, got totaled in a single car accident on wet roads by my wife. And we did find locally and purchase another S80, a 2000 model. But, like most insurance deals, we did not get enough money to re-purchase as good of a car as the 99 S80. So, my only experience with a 99 S80 was a great one, for my first S80! The second S80, well, that one has a few items to work on. And even then it would never be a great of a car as the first one. One good thing from the wreck though, my wife is sold on Volvo's now. I do wish that I had the extra money to buy back the totaled one, I could have used a lot of great parts from it. And the insurance would not tell me who it was sold to, they said if a totaled car is sold to a private person they cannot reveal that info. So, I expect to search for the vin number a few years from now and find it as sold with a salvage title. That will be interesting if it happens.
