Multiple Oil Leaks

Post by lgiesbre »

Dear AWD Forum,

I just got back from the dealer with a diagnosis of oil leaks from my turbo, oil pan seal, and camshaft seal. $900 each to replace the two seals and $2,000 to replace the entire turbo unit(?) on my 2000 V70XC with 112K.

@ 105K I spent $750 to replace the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system per dealer saying it was clogged and that if I didn't I might have damage to my engine seals.

First question, isn't cleaning of the PCV system supposed to be part of each 15K service (I've had all services done religiously)? If so, why would it clog?

Second, I'm not having warm fuzzies about this dealer's recommendations after reading some other posts here. While I hope no one has had a similar experience, if someone has, please let me know what you did.

I will also share my (limited) knowledge about how I fixed my MAF when the dealer said it needed to be replaced ($400). Here's a hint, just take it out and clean it with MAF spray cleaner! No problems since.

Thanks! :)

Get a second opinion...I have a feeling that this dealer is trying to take you for a ride...engine leaks can be from lots of places and certainly don't cost what your dealer says to replace (unless it's a rear main seal). Also, you mentioned a 105K mile service, but what about the timing belt? Was that done then? If not, it should be done ASAP.

Dear MadeInJapan,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, we did have the timing belt replaced @105K (at aforementioned dealer).

It seems like several posters to this forum are in CT where they seem to have a good shop for their Volvos. Any recommendations for someone in the DC/Baltimore area?

Thanks again!

the turbos frequently have blow by and tend to drip/weep at the charge tubes and turbo. we do not generally attempt to sell a new turbo unless it is not performing.

as for the cam seals it does sound high, its about a 4 hour job though for both. but they only cost 10 - 15 $$
