05 XC70 brakes

Post by jaycooper »

I worked on Volvos back in the early 70s. Finally I have one for myself. I was told that my brakes needed to be replaced front and rear. Is this a routine process to change or are special tools or expertise needed to change the pads?

Welcome to MVS...this is pretty routine and easy to do. You'll need a (I believe) 10mm hex socket to deal with the caliper bolts. I did our '04 V70 pads and it was even easier than the S70 (or 850).

Thanks.. I went to a shop tonight to have them give the brakes a look.. they said there is about 2mm left and they want to turn the rotors because of the ridge. The meat of the rotor is about 24mm..

The hex socket is 7mm.

You are very close to the recommended minimum for the disc (rotor) thickness.

On the front Volvo recommend replacement at 23mm or 23.8mm when installing new pads. With 16" discs the minimum is 25mm or 25.8mm when installing new pads.

On the rear the recommended minimum is 10mm or 10.7mm when installing new pads.

OK guys.. took the volvo a local shop this morning to put on front pads..kept the rotors.. when I picked up the car the pedal was soft.. it stops but very soft compared to before the change. Pumping seems to help a bit especially when the engine is off. I found one general brake response that the abs pump may have air in it.. anyway, I am taking the car back in the morning for the mechanic to have a look.. but looking for reasons..

Maybe this will help others like me... so this is the result.. put on new rotors and it is just fine.. on this model and I am sure others the rotors seem to wear right along with the pads.. mine were worn so that the new discs did not seat flat causing a soft pedal and less efficient braking. I read that you can measure the rotor and usually not change until the second set of discs.. this was not the case for me.. and changing the rotors is better than turning them.. for a number of reasons..
