2000 Volvo S40 - Brake Rotor Replacement

Post by Aerobo »

Does anybody have experience removing the rotors from a 2000 S40? I removed the brake calipers, but the rotors don't budge (even with a rubber mallet). There's a large hex nut (about 1.5" diameter) in the middle. Does this need to be removed first?

I removed all 4 rotors in July. I used a small screw in a little hole on the side of the front rotors, and when I tightened it down, it pushed the rotor away from the hub. I just looked for a screw that fit the hole and it worked.

The rear rotors were more trouble. There is a small hex screw that holds the rotor to the hub. I couldn't get it to move so I drilled it out. The rotors then came off with a rubber mallet.

I found that the bolts for the calipers were difficult to remove, so I used PB Blaster solvent on them a day before I started the job.

People seem to complain that the OE rotors wear quickly, so I used Brembo rotors from Tirerack.

Be patient and good luck.
