'02 V70 blown head gasket.. help please..?

Post by Gilles »

Background:
The lower radiator hose came loose, the fluid drained quickly and unfortunately my wife did not see (..!) or ignored the message "low coolant, Shut Engine Off" needless to say, our V70 (non turbo) with 80K miles now has a blown head gasket... when the engine it's cold runs fine but once it warms up starts to misfire and blowing white smoke through the tail pipe.

In the past I have replaced several heads/head gaskets in other vehicles (single & twin overhead cams). But today I stoped at the Volvo dealer and the service MGR (friend of a friend..) told me that I would not be able to replace the head gasket without the special tools that are used to hold the cams (variable intake/exhaust) system during assembly.

He also mentioned that both, the head and cam housing (most of the times) have to be surfaced together to achieve a good matching surfaces, he also metioned that there was a company in Santa Ana (CA) that can get the head straight before resurfacing (the dealer uses them).

Has someone here done this job that can share some coments or tips..? Is this job really such a difficult job as described by the service manager?

Any tips or leads will be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Gilles

I bought a 1995 850 turbo with a dead miss on #2 cylinder. After diagnosing problem I found cracked valve . Removed cylinder head and sent to my favorite machine shop, upon receiving head back, I tried to fabricate the tools to install the top cover ( which on a Volvo holds the camshafts in place) but was not happy with the result,so I went searching on e bay and foud a kit (new) with the tool adapters plus as a GREATY bonus for me the kit included the crankshaft locking device. With the locking tool its foolproof to ibnstall the top. Of course it was 300.00 but it was a very satisfying experience. Car runs like a top .... hope it helps you out,if you have any questions feel free to contact me. Ciao Ciao

there should be no reason to resurface the cam case and top of the head. actually do not do it. the cams do not have bearings just the machined surface of head and cam case. any machine shop can check the head for warpage and cracks, with cvvt you really should have the cam alignment tools older 850's etc i dont bother with the tool. ive got a pic of the cam alignment ill try and post it, its from the drivers side/back side of cams where the special tool would go

Ariete57; Do you know if the special tool you bought for the '95 850 turbo is the same one used on the '02 V70?
Could be possible to post a picture of this tool?

I believe that the V70 has an independent variable timing gizmo on both cams. But if the tool is the same I will start looking for one, thank you in advance.

the tool is the same for all of the cams

the cam tool is the one on the right in the middle
this is not the best picture ill snap one tomorrow at work
the ends of the tool are keyed to fit in the end of the cams, it would be possible to not use the tool and mark the front of the gear and the rear of the cams etc. but its not worth the hassle and possible bad outcome.
