Most common problems w /S80?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Most common problems w /S80?

Post by steve »

I am considering selling my 1993 850glt and replacing it with the S80. Probably a new one. What in your experience are the most common problems with the S80?? I will use this information in making my purchase decision. Thanks.

From what I gather by reading this forum, The 2000 model is a loser. All models seem to have their share of tranny failures /leaks and idle problems in general.

So, I'll ask, does anyone have any experience with the 2004 or 2005 models yet?? Has Volvo gotten their act together and shown any improvement??? :?:

First, I can't comment on 2004 or 05 S80s. Second, take my words with a big grain of salt because I've never owned one.

That said, my dad has a '99. It's been in the dealer's garage a few times for recalls -- something with the suspension was one of them. Always no cost.

One time when I was driving it the Pull Over Now message popped up on the info display. I did. I reseated fuses and turned it on -- and it worked fine, never displaying the same message again as far as I know. Luck? I have no clue.

Recently my dad said the display is telling him the ABS computer is bad, and the ABS light is on. He hasn't pursued a fix for that as I type this.

Please note he drives his S80 like a grandmother, so I think that helps.

Do you find, from what you have read on the forum or otherplaces or heard that the t-6s give more problems than the NAs?

Thanks

I've just hit 12,000 miles in my 2005 model year S80 D5.

Basically very impressed and no real problems despite my uncompromising driving style. Much of the mileage is high stress urban driving - front tyres lasted 11000 miles!!!

I say no real problems. Its had a new alternator after about 4000 miles because there was an annoying, faint but audible 'chirping' noise from the pulley. The dealer eventually decided that the problem is a 'known issue' and put the new unit on, but the chirping was still there albeit fainter.

Recently they have done something else - they're a bit vague - something about a new pulley and / or brace, and the noise seems to have gone altogether.

BTW, anyone know the deal with replacing the pollen filter. My volvo parts distributer in London reckons that the latest S80's have helpfully moved the filter to behind the dash and says its hard to change! (Great - it's meant to be changed every service - reckon a dealer would actually change it?)

Also anyone got any experience of electronic tuning products - they claim to increase BHP to around 190 AND improve fuel consumption.

I have 19,000 miles on a 2004 S80.

No problems so far.
