Also, are you rebuilding this yourself or sending it off?
It looks very tricky and if you hit the turbine wings with the rubber mallet you need to use in the process you'll ruin it and have to buy a new one, but it is doable if you're careful.

I was getting smoke out the exhaust pipe. After troubleshooting it, I determined it was the turbo. After opening up the turbo tonight, it looks like I was right. The insides are coked up pretty bad, so much so that the turbo does not spin freely. The rebuild itself will be easy. Reinstalling the turbo? I'm not looking forward to that at all...

Several years ago I rebuilt the turbo on my 940 Turbo myself, which means I "balanced" it myself by making marks on the appropriate parts of the turbo so I could line everything back up when I reassembled it. It's still running fine.

This time I bought a rebuild kit from johnsmith04shop on ebay (http://store.auctiva.com/johnsmith04shop?rlid=4), who offers free balancing if you buy a kit from him. He sends the kit to you, then you send it back to him with certain parts from your turbo. He'll inspect, clean, polish and balance those parts, then send them back to you for reassembly. Sounded like a good deal, so I'm going that route this time.

Take pictures of the rebuild process and re-install. You'll make some friends here :D

That guy sounds like a decent turbo rebuilder. I sent you a PM but the wrong link to the rebuild kit from Osaka (that was for my turbo) just so you'll see what I was talking about. Because you have the 13G, you need this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mitsubis ... 0092399351
Btw, you can upgrade your compressor wheel and get more out of your 13G turbo's performance while you have it apart. Information on how to do that is here: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.ph ... opic=86240 If you do this however, I would definitely get a boost gauge. Evidently the instruction sheet on the turbo rebuild will be sent to you if you buy the kit.

My understanding is that if you scribe a line across the compressor wheel, nut, and the end of the shaft before you take it apart it will stay balanced and you won't have to send it off for that (assuming it was balanced to begin with). Ah...now I see you did the same thing with your previous turbo. Very cool you were able to do this!

I may end up splitting this thread...we got off topic from removing a turbo to now rebuilding one. LOL

Could you tell me how long it took you to start and finish this project? I have the kit and what is it that requires ballancing?
Thank Tri

I have never done it- just read about it a lot. Send me a PM w/ your email and I'll send you a file on the how-to.
You can mark the inner portion that comes out to the outer portion and if you line everything back up exactly, you can avoid having to have the turbo balanced (from what I understand about the process).
