how long should i keep my 850 GLE

Post by pierre »

Hi, I'm new to this and know little about cars. I have a silver Volvo 850 GLE 1995 auto. it's done 190,000 kms and has been regularly serviced. I've never had a problem with it and most of the miles were done on long country roads. At the last service, the mechanic said the transmission was slipping and would have to be replaced within a year - he suggested selling the car.
Is this a good idea ? - I want to keep it and even if I had to rehaul the transmission so that I could keep it for longer I would seriously consider it. How long does an 850 last ? - how many kms can I expect ? I thought Volvos were long lasting cars
I know these are very general questions, but i would appreciate any of your specialist knowledge

Thanks, Pierre

It would seem safe that if you put in a new transmission when it goes bad that as long as the other components are running well you should be ok.

But... the problem is as the car gets older you'll be pumping more money into it for things that have to be changed. A forum and site like this helps a lot so you can do a good amount of work on your own and cut out the high labor costs.

Lastly... if you put in a new transmission and the car "goes bad" you're stuck with a loss of that cost. It's not like you put in a new transmission and it ups the value of your car.

So just weigh your options and decide what would benefit you the most. See how much a new trans will cost you and basically add that on top of a another car you would buy. Because basically if you get a new trans, but decide the car is no good after that... that cost is basically part of thew new car. Hope that's not confusing?

I've kind of rambled here... hopefully someone else can expand on this and give some other advice.

190,000kms is about 86,000 miles, and a Volvo should be just getting to the broke in stage. I have read many times in this forum about the need to flush the tranny. New fluid can be a great thing to older trannys. If it were to do the trick, it would be a cheep fix.

Good Luck

I think 190,000 km is more like 118,000 miles - still low miles for this vehicle's transmission. If vehicle is in otherwise good condition, I'd repair the gearbox, or replace it with a used one from a boneyard.

I have a 1993 850 and have well over 200,000 miles on it and it still runs and handles great.
