volvo axle shaft help!!!

Post by oklahoma volvo »

I have a 2001 s60 T5 with about 116k miles and I have problem. I have replaced the engine mounts, tires, and some front end parts and as of two days ago I am getting an amazing shudder/ vibration from the front end. If I am excelerating I dont have it, if I go into manual mode and rev high in the gears in first or second I dont get it, its only when I am going 55 mph or more that I get it. when I am on the gas passing or on cruse control the shaking begins as the ground speed increases but as soon as I get off the gas it all goes away. I have inspected the joints on the shaft and the boots are good, no real oil and everything to me looks good. Is there anyone out there who may know what the problem may be. I suspect its the axle shafts but no one has told me so far, any help would be appreciated, thank you.

After replacement of front end suspension parts, did you get the car aligned?

I think the axle shafts are a good place to start looking (as you did the alignment and balancing)...but for kicks, rotate your tires again and see if maybe the vibration goes away (could be a bent rim)...or it could be tie rod ends or even ball joints (try to see if there's movement if you grab the wheels at 12:00 and 6:00 and also at 9:00 and 3:00).

Well its the axle shafts both sides that are bad. I took it to volvo for an estimate and well after they quotes me $1500 to repair them, and charged me $98 to look into the problem to tell me that it was the shafts,I figured I would just try and do it on my own. Kinda weird that both sides are bad.

That is strange...
Let me recommend www.ipdusa.com for your axle shafts... FCP Groton has crappy parts for your car and I don't believe that Raxles carries anything for S60's.

I've not used them and really haven't heard of them.
What is the brand on these? Good price, btw.
I just hope you didn't buy some Chinese knock-off's.
Many have had problems with them- but you do have a year warranty. You should know soon enough if these are going to work/be good for you or not.

I think my local autozone sells new axles and they have a lifetime warranty on them.

$65 for a drivers side axle and CV joint combo for my VW Jetta VR6 with a lifetime warranty...compared to over a $100 online with no warranty.
