Tie rod end or Rack

Post by Ernie Orwig »

I ahave a 1999 s70 GLT with 130,000 miles on her. I noticed when I drove the car the other night that it had a wobble. I had to change the oil, so I put it on the rack and found the pass front tire side to side wobbles. I swear it feels like it is in the rack. Does the rack have a history of wearing or do you think it is the tie rod end....By the way I have a good oil leak in the front of the motorcoming out of the front cover...Any ideas? Thanks....Ernie

It's the tie rod ends most likely (check inner and outer)...on our cars, this is considered part of the rack...at least that's been my take on these ends.

Great, I didn't know there was a inner tie rod. I just knew it was coming from the rack

if one wheel wobbles independant of the other it's tie rods. obviously you can see the play in an outer tie rod.
if both sides wobble together and the play seems to be at the column, it's the rack.

If you wiggle the drive wheel with the front end off the ground, I suggest you also keep an eye on the steering wheel and notice whether the trans is in park. I heard a clunk when wiggling the drive wheel with the car in park but I think I was hearing the steering lock. When I took it out of park and wiggled the drive wheel, I could see the steering wheel moving. I think this is normal.

There is a rubber boot on the inner tie rod connector. With the drive wheel off, if you take off the tie from the inboard end and move the boot to the outside, you can see if the inner tie rod connector has play when you wiggle the brake rotor and hub.
