I have a problem that I hope someone may be able to help me with. I took a short trip from Orange, CA to Burbank to a convention. On the way there the car worked fine, but on the way home, the "check Engine" light came on. Now understanding how these things work, and without using an OBD II scanner, I am suspicious of the MAP sensor since I went from sea level to a higher altitide then down again... I dont have more info to go by, but all I would like to know is if a sudden change of altitude on a sensor would cause it to fail and turn on the light.
Is there anyway to get the codes without buying an expensive tool?

I'm not sure about your specific problem, but you can get your OBDII codes read at various shops. Pep Boys charges 20 bucks just for the codes and just call around to other auto parts store they may or may not do it.
If you have an idependent foreign car mechanic he is likely to have an OBDII reader and might do it for free.
Hope this helped
