940 - 1994 - belt system

Post by Orchidomegaly »

The screw on my belt system comes loose. I don't know the technical name of the part but i'm refering to the main pulley in the belt system that is attached to the engine block.

The screw that screws into the block and, i am told, screws into the crankshaft comes loose.

I've grabbed a wrench and tightened it up until i can't anymore, but when i start the car the screw comes loose and is spinning in the opposite direction that is screws in.

I've taken the screw out and it doesn't appear to be stripped. Also, when i tighten it with a wrench, i tighten it until i just start rotating the belt system. I can't seem to get the pulley to not move after it gets tight.

Has anybody ever come across something like this before? Does anybody know what the problem could be? Any help would be very much appreciated! :)

Have you tried a spring coil lock washer or just a dab of locktite. Did you examine the female side of the thread? If the threads have gone there are a few solutions like oversize drill and tap or thread insert.

I am wondering how that bolt has come loose. Have you had it out recently for something like a timing belt change?

It should be torqued in at 44 ft/lbs + an additional 60 degrees. Tightening it with a wrench, adding a spring lock washer or Loctite will not keep it in place. The pulley has to be held stationary with either a special tool or a screwdriver wedged in the flywheel to stop the crankshaft turning whilst it is tightened.
