1994 940 Engine won't turn over after replacing timing belt

Post by correllkp »

Water pump was leaking at top of pump so decided to change pump and timing belt while I was at it. A little background. My son was driving the car and said it started to smell funny...said the temp gauge looked normal. By time he got home I noticed the pump was leaking but I think he got home before the engine overheated. So, changed the pump, the seals, the crankshaft pulley, the tensioner, the timing belt. Everything seemed to align correctly. Put it all back together. Pump still leaks, don't even have to turn car on, just start to fill up the fluid and it starts to leak from the top of the pump (like it did before). Engine won't turn over, almost like there is no spark but can smell gas. I think for the pump I will need to use gasket material but not sure why the car won't even try to turn over. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well, if engine did not turn at all, then you have a leaking injector.

If engine is locked up, and timing belt was installed incorrectly, then someone may have saved the head too much.

Everything your need to know about: Engine: Seals, Belts, Crankcase Ventilation

When I first did a timing belt on my 240, it took 3 iterations/placements to get the engine in proper "TDC". A great preflight test is to manually turn it over a couple revolutions, and inspect to make sure all timing marks still line up.

Update. Turns out that for some reason the cam gear had two opposite white marks...I of course selected the wrong white mark when putting everything back together. Looking closer you can see a dimple in the gear...using that as the alignment mark the engine started after putting everything back together.
