1984 244dl won't start

i've been having trouble with gas mileage and rough idle, my mechanic claims it's probably the maf. drive car to and from work today, a little under 20 miles round trip, got home and cleaned the maf as per instructions. put back in, the correct way, car idled rough. shut car off and tried moving maf around, and now car will not start. tried to disconnect the maf, and it still won't start. i can smell gasoline under the hood when it's popped, and the car tries to turn over, it cranks but no starting. i need help, i cannot get around without this car
