2003 s40 check engine light on
2003 s40 check engine light on
I brought it to a mechanic to read the code and he said it was a volvo specific code so had to bring it to the dealer. the dignosis is a camshaft reset valve and engine oil flush. how serious is this? need to get my emission test done, but they can't do it with the check engine light on. I appreciate any help and advice, thanks!

Those descriptions don't ring a bell with me. Do you know the specific codes you got (the numbers?)?

Each time the engine is switched off the camshaft pulley sets itself in the locked position. On restarting the engine the control module checks that the pulley leaves the locked position. If the control module detects that the pulley is still in the locked position it sets code ECM61. This may be an intermittent or a permanent fault.
Possible causes are:
Poor electrical connections.
Low oil pressure in the engine.
Blocked oil ducts for the camshaft reset valve.
Defective camshaft reset valve.
Check the connectors on the camshaft reset valve, the control module and the camshaft position sensor. Check for contact resistance and oxidation.
Check the engine oil for quality and contaminants and replace if necessary. This is what the dealer has suggested, I believe.
Check for low oil pressure.
Remove the camshaft reset valve and check for blockages in the oil ducts for the valve and the camshaft pulley.
Bill.

This may be more than "a total novice" should attempt. However, the mechanic who read the code may be able to sort out the problem. Dealers tend to charge too much.
Of course there is a downside to using an independent as the dealer may be the only one who can erase the code. Check with your mechanic to see what he can do.
