1986 740 Suspension

Post by lcurtis »

I have a 1986 740 gle. The car is really shaky. Mechanic says I need to overhaul suspension. I'm trying to price parts. Mechanic gave list of parts and cost of parts as:
Rear:
Denso track - need 2
Front:
Denso track - need 2
strut cushion - need 2

Does anybody know the offical part name of these parts. I have looked all over the net and can't fine parts by these names? Help please.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Denso is a Japanese company which manufactures car parts, most notably the Denso spark plugs.

With the vague description provided by your mechanic these could be any of several parts on the suspension.

Try to find out exactly what needs to be replaced as several parts dealers stock suspension parts for Volvo.

I agree with Bill that your mechanic wasn't very clear.

Now, when you say your car is "shaky", what do you mean? Usually a shaky car is the sign of tires out of balance or warped brake rotors. Have you had your tires balanced lately or your brakes checked?

Judging by the part name, my guess is that your mechanic wants to replace your front struts and rear shocks. This will cure a "bouncy" car, but not a "shaky" one.

One more thing, if your mechanic doesn't have enough sense to tell you the actual name of the part he wants to replace, I wouldn't give him enough credit to think he diagnosed it correctly. I would get a second opinion.

I guess bouncy would be a better description than shaky. I had someone else look at it before I took it to the mechanic and that person did mention shocks and struts. The mechanic suggested that I not drive the car at all. It's my only tranportations so I have to drive it.

What parts would I need to replace the shocks and struts.

You would need two each of front strut inserts and rear shock absorbers.

Your mechanic also said "strut cushions" which I assume to mean upper strut mount and bearing.
