2000 Volvo V70XC AWD multiple OBD code problems

Post by KCarroll007 »

My daughter recently purchased this used vehicle with 101K miles. Runs and drives okay. The check engine light was on which I thought would be an O2 sensor. Took to local parts house and had it scanned. We have 11 codes even after I removed the battery cable and reconnected. They are

PO722-Output speed sensor no signal

P1618-Manf Ctrl Aux Inputs, aux outputs (info on line says this is transmission MIL request turned on by ECM by trans ctrl module due to TCM faults logged)

P0445-Evap emission Ctrl sys purge valve C short

P0448-Evap emission ctrl sys vent circuit short

P0245-Turbo/Sup wastegate solenoid “A” low (turbo charger ctrl valve)

P0031-Oxy H02S sensor bank 1 sensor 1 heat circuit low

P0037 Oxy H02S sensor bank 1 sensor 2 heat circuit low

P0136-02 sensor circuit malfunction, bank 1 sensor 2

P1332-Mfg Ctrl Ign Sys or misfire (Dealer should make this repair free, warranty for 10 yr or 200K)

P1550-Mfg Ctrl Veh speed idle speed ctrl Aux input

P1655-Mfg Ctrl Aux input & output

Car is presently running pretty good we think but cannot figure out where to go on this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many of those are related to the front 02 sensor...that and you might have a vacuum hose (or 2 or 3) leak as well as the MAF sensor. Check for vacuum leaks first...then check the condition of your plugs- replace and gap them correctly (cheap Bosch copper core's are a good recommendation or Volvo plugs- more expensive)...do the cheaper things first and start whittling away at those trouble codes...

Thanks Made in Japan

Found a friend of a friend who was a former Volvo mechanic with his own shop now. He hooked up to his computer and found only 4 codes. Number 1 was the ABS module, then a coolant temp sensor, camshaft position sensor and said the thermostat needs to be replaced.
Estimated minor parts $200
He rebuilds ABS $500

Found link on this site as to how to repair the ABS module. Since I was formerly a mechanic prior to this job thought I might give that a try.

Your thoughts??

Hey Kenny...The ABS can lead to many false codes so I would do that first...you can try the rebuild yourself or send it off for a rebuilt (less than $150- not $500). Good luck and post back!

Thanks guys for all of your help.

We took the ABS control unit off and resoldered the damaged components (there were quite a few).

When we put it back on and took the car for a ride, the trouble lights on the dash disappeared. (Evidently, at 14 mph the ABS checks all of the sensor signals and tests all the solenoids.) When we drove it for the first time, after putting the ABS control unit back on, the ABS and service lights disappeared right at 14 mph.

Seems to have worked. The car is driving fine, and the speedometer and odometer are working now. Also, the flashing up arrow is gone.
