Looking to Buy 2003 S60: Good deal or not?

Post by svendyensen »

Hello All,
A co-worker of mine has a 2003, AWD 2.5L S60. He is the third owner of the car and the car has 120k miles on it. He takes it in for maintenance to the dealer every time and is really proactive at getting repairs done (he replaces things 3-5k miles before they need to be replaced) The car has the black leather seats and moon roof, so I think it has the premium package.

I am wondering what people are getting for real-world gas mileage for this car.

I think he would take $9000 for the car. Think it's a good deal? Thanks!

Not even close, that's an obcene price.
That car wholesales for about $4000, maybe less with those miles!
I can get you an 04 with 1/2 the miles for between 9 to 10 grand.
If you want to spend a hair more, maybe 12+ grand, I can get you into a 2005 S60 2.5T with 70-80K miles for that kind of money, (a VASTLY improved car)!

My 2001 2.4T (no AWD) gets at least 26MPG at 70mph on the freeway. It suffers in stop-and go and city traffic probably down to 20. My avg is about 23-24MPG in mixed. For AWD, I would subtract 1 mpg.

From what I have learned, Volvos are known for longevity. The 01 models had transmission problems, but solved via software by 02. One thing to consider: any high-mileage AWD vehicle driven on dry pavement is at risk for developing expensive drivetrain problems.
