trunk is full can't get to back of trunk thru arm rest hole.
Will it be better to break out the left tail light hoping to get to the trunk release or drill out the lock?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
If you break the light you will still have the internal cover to contend with and you may still not be able to open it without damaging the lock.
Try your friendly, local car thief who can get into anything (only joking) or a locksmith who will probably be able to get in without too much damage.
Bill.

WHAT YEAR???
I have a '78 and found out that on occasion mine will lock for no reason too, and I can only open it with various stiff/thick metal keys, like the keys I used to get into traffic signal cabinets or my pontiacs key...
I put the tip of the key in the key slot and start to turn, then the whole thing starts to turn when the slot lines up with the rest of it... if it does the same thing as mine and the door key isn't the same key, then try finding a stiffer key than the ignition/door key, and only stick the key in about a quarter of an inch and start playing with it. Works every time for me. Eventually you will wear it down to the point where you can just unlock it by sticking your ignition/door key in the slot all the way, but you will have to do the same trick by getting it to line up first then just shove the key in all the way.
