2000 S80 Starter Replacement

I drive a 2000 S80 Turbo with 105k miles on it. This weekend it gave the first sign that the starter/solenoid needs replacement and I would like some confirmation of how to go about replacing it. I found where it is located, but it looks like it could be a challenging task to replace. Does anyone have some diagrams, instructions, or advice before I get started?

Forgot to mention...when turning the key all I hear is the loud clicking sound (like you hear when the starter is not engaging). I would apply a couple hammer taps to it in order to free up the magnets but I can't get anything down there with enough force. So, luckily it chose to play this game while sitting in my garage and not while my wife and kids were on the town.

Your starter replacement is actually much easier than on any of my cars. Here are the instructions:

You'll also need these instructions so you don't mess things up when disconnecting the battery:

Wow, this is great. Thanks for the prompt response!

I won't have the new starter in my hands until Wednesday and won't have time to tackle it until Friday night or Saturday, but I'll keep you posted.

Are you sure the starter is bad? Typically, clicking of the solenoid indicates low battery voltage. How is your battery?

It's funny you mention that...

Well, I managed to get the starter this evening and just finished installing it. I was feeling quite satisfied with the job but that all came to a halt when I turned the key and got the same result.

The result is probably better described notsomuch as a loud clicking, but more like loud rapping. I mistakenly diagnosed the problem (while the hood was closed) but now that I have swapped out the starter and listened more intently I am afraid the problem may be related to something else.

I generally don't consider myself adept enough to diagnose many problems, but I am very willing to attack the problem once it is identified. And in this case I could use some expertise. Do I need to tow it to a shop or have you got some idea of what I am up against?

It is probably just that the battery is bad. These cars have so much load that the batteries will die if the car isn't started for a few days. Mine goes dead after about 3 weeks. I would try charging the battery, then see if the car will start. If so, you might be OK with just driving the car more frequently (assuming the battery plates haven't warped). Also, make sure the connections to the battery are clean and tight. If the battery won't hold a charge, try a new battery. You have to buy a special battery from Volvo because it has a vent hose connection on it since it's located in the trunk. This prevents the buildup of hydrogen gas (which is explosive) in your trunk. If you put in a new battery and it still dies even with frequent driving, then you have a charging problem - most likely you will need a new alternator.

True about the vent hose but many Battery companies now sell a battery with that vent hose, so it is not true that you have to get a Volvo one. The last one I bot was a Bosch and it had it...I could have used it in our V70 (battery in the back) but it went into my S70.

Thanks for the tip about the battery...I stuck my charger on the car and it started right up. I may be wrong, but I think it even mumbled, "way to go Einstein" as I sat astonished by the simplicity of the solution.

I've much to learn about this car and I thank you all for your kind instruction.

Hello, i'd just like to say how amazing this site it... I'm trying ot help out a friend get a second car on the road because she is driving her back up everyday day and night looking after her 17 yr old son whom is dying from cancer. I'd like to be of some help and I am very good when it comes to fixing cars. Nevertheless she owns a 2000 s80 t6, she couldn't shift into gear, well she couldn't start the car so now it has been sitting for quite a few months.. Being from CAA a know a little bit about these things, when I jumped the car all I got were the lights coming on and a that ticking noise.... tick tick tick when I try and turn it over... can anyone tell me if I can replace the starter myself? I was told it had to be up on a hoist but from new information I understand it is just under the aircleaner....? if this is correct, is the diagram you posted for another fellow correct for this 2000 s80 t6? and is 400 to much to pay for a new starter|?? cheers,

Ok so I have everything disconnected and its getting dark lol... But I can't get the bugger to come lose... ? Is there something I'm missing?
