Replacing front axle on 2002 S40

Post by jnosacka »

My daughter's mechanic has been throwing ideas and parts at her car for a while. She's a college student and terminally broke so dad's going to try to replace the axle. I've ordered one that should arrive today. If anyone can provide instructions, I'd be mighty appreciative.

P.S. You can use two large slotted screwdrivers as the "jimmy tool." Or...you can use something that looks like Volvo's tool (maybe you can find one at the auto parts store):

I can't wait to get started. The instructions look great! Does anyone know the torque for the centre nut on the drive shaft, passenger side?

For your model year (both sides of 2001 and newer) VADIS says to tighten your yellow flanged lock nut with black washer to 180Nm (133 ft. lbs) and then in one sweep, tighten another 30 degrees. In other words, get it damn tight!

Job went great! The only hitch was that I pulled on that thin metal shield when I was moving the spindle out of the way. When I put the tire back on and drove around, the shield was scraping so I had to get back under there and bend it out of the way.

I didn't need any kind of jimmy tool. Once I removed the bearing cover, the axle came right out with just a little tug.

Thanks again.
