740 1990 Heater fan won't turn on and fuse pops

Post by Jonnyk »

My fuse goes as soon as the fan knob is turned. I am wondering if there is something caught in the fan itself that could be causing this. I just cleaned out the air intake on the outside of the car, under the windshield, but haven't pulled the guts out yet. I am currently hoping that a new fuel pump and relay will get my car running. no gas, and it ran fine the night before. Any suggestions on either one of these?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

It is possible that debris has got as far as the fan but I would be looking for an electrical fault before ripping the guts out.

Is your system manual control or automatic temperature control?

As far as the fuel pump and relay which pump are you replacing? If it is the main pump only you could find you have the same problem in no time at all because the old in-tank pump can contaminate the main pump. Do a search on fuel pumps in this forum with the author name 'Kmaniac in California USA'. Chris has had some dealings with the fuel pumps and has a good write-up of his solution.

Awesome, thanks. I have some of his posts. My 240 is a base model with the main pump in the tank. I found that out yesterday as I rolled around in my trunk and replaced the pump-the net was in really bad shape, cracked and brittle. So, new pump, net and BIG filter. I forgot how big the fuel filters are on Volvos. New relay is ticking and I can here suction, but my battery is low from trying to start the car so many times and get fuel up to the rail. Trickle charger is hooked up. I did check at the filter and gas had made it there. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
