740 GLE Timing Belt Topic is solved

I have a 88 740GLE and the timing belt just broke on it. I need to know if there is any damage done to the engine or if it will be fine just to replace the belt. Also when the belt broke the car was only at 2000rmp
Should it be alright???

If it's a 16 valve, it'll likely have damage because it's an 'interferance' engine -- the valves and pistons overlap.

If it's not 16 v, or you didn't hear anything when the belt broke, you're probably a-ok.

Well my 740 has a 2.3 which i believe is a 8v right??? I'm praying!!! but when the belt broke the car automatically stalled and i didn't hear anything clanging or banging in the engine....and like i said it wan't reved too high, so should it be fine??? I guess we'll find out anyway since it got towed to the shop today!! Thanks alot!

Easy way to tell which engine you have. Do the spark plugs go into the right side of the head or are they in the top and middle of the head. I would say that there is a 90% probablity that your engine is the 8V which has the plugs entering the head on the right side (passengers side). The 16V twin cam positions the spark plugs in the top center of the combustion chamber, they are installed through the top and center of the valve covers.

As VolvoDude mentioned, the 8V will probably be OK, when the belt breaks the cam and distributor stop turning, which causes the engine to immediatly stop
