'96 850, runs fine but then dies when idling, at light etc

Post by Curly352 »

G'day,

I tried to do a search just in case this has been addressed in the past. Not familiar with this site but am with the Range Rover Site. ANyway... recently purchased a 6 850 with 98,000 miles on it. Thing seems to run great, but every now and again... when pulling up to a light, it will just die, or when sitting there, idling fine... it will just die, then it will not start right away. refuses to idle.... but after a few minutes of keeping the revs up... it will work fine.
I have changed the plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor. I am thinking that the mass airflow sensor may be the culprit, but have also read about the temp sensor being bad. My temp gage does seem be be working properly, though have not paid that much attention to it other than car seems to act up when it is warm, and been running at slow speeds for a while.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Curly

TPS sensor, I think, because he is the one who keep engine on when it is idle, try reading codes, 4-1-1 is for tps

best regards

Yeah... I forgot to mention... I get no codes at all. None! I have checked several times, and continue to check in the hopes that it will manifest itself bad enough to pop some codes. Also... it is a 1996 (guess I was typing too fast)
Have found that if I turn the key off, for about five seconds... then it will start up fine and seem to run fine. There is no consistency to it though. It may run fine for days, or minutes? Definately a bugga though.
Cheers,
Curly

first check the house/hose connection to the mass air flow sensors. I had the same problem where my 93 850 kept dying at lights when decelerate or idling. Also had no codes. Mechanic replace lots of relays until he noticed that the air intake to themass air flow sensors was cracked and need replacement. Once that was done, no more problem.

Hmmm!. For last couple months, the wife reports low heat and a non moving temperature gauge and Tues night the check engine light came on and now it is hesitating @ idle, "trying to die" my wife say. wondering if our 96 is developing the same problem as yours. Wife is going to pep boys/auto zone or dealer if necessary to get code read

Mechanic temp tested the thermostat, worked ok, cleaned and liberally coated the sensor with dialectric grease, but it didn't seen to change anything. The mechanic probably got good heat because he ran it at idle (didn't drive it) and if left @ idle the temp needle will creep up and the heat improves. But you can drive it @ highway speed for an hour and the needle won't budge and the heat won't happen. Wasn't too concerned until the engine light came on and it started to hesitate @ idle. Two problems might be completeely unrelated. I neglected to mention that the timing belt was replaced on the same trip to the mechanic (this was two weeks ago)

I know alot about 245's. This is my first non 245, so forgive my cluelessness. My wife drives this one also, so I may be missing symptoms.
