Still having the V70 window issue

Post by mingom »

I know I've been dragging this out but I'm still stumped.
The windows, mirrors, and sunroof still don't work. I put power directly to all the window motors to make sure I got them all up to keep the snow out, so I know all of the window motors work. I've checked and re-checked the circuit breaker and that is also fine. I have no clue what could be going on. One other symptom I've noticed is that none of the door switches (all four doors) light up anymore, which leads me to believe that there isn't power making it all the way back. Would a faulty master switch cause all doors to not work? The power locks still function, which only adds to my confusion. Thanks in advance for any opinions.

It does sound like a "no power" deal.
The LEDs in the switch are connected to window power.
Have you checked the voltage on the output side of the
breaker while it's in circuit and you're trying to move a window?

Update:
I replaced the master switch after finding that I have a ground to short somewhere, so I assumed it was the switch. However, this did nothing. Has anyone had problems such as this, or seen a ground to short which causes the circuit breaker to trip constantly from startup?

A stuck or bound motor would do that as well.

Does the breaker still trip with the master switch completely unplugged?

Yeah it does trip with the master switch removed. I've applied power to all the windows separately MIJ, so I don't believe they are stuck. I tried running through all the wiring diagrams with an electrical engineer and we couldn't find anything when testing with a multimeter except that it was shorting to ground. Really thought it was going to be that master switch. I tried pulling the sunroof switch and the mirror switch but still no luck.

Have you tried cleaning the switches with electrical contact cleaner? They might be a bit dirty.

Did they all fail at the same time or did they go out one by one?

Everything failed at once. All 4 windows, power mirrors, sunroof. I've cleaned the switches and such, it's looking like i'm going to have to start chasing individual wires to find where it's shorting to ground. Unless anyone has any other suggestions?

Here is a link to the schematics. The site is very, very, very slow:

They are somewhat incomplete.

Electrical wiring problems are a bear to find but very easy to fix once you find the problem.

Thanks for the diagrams, I have a few different ones, they're just not the easiest to follow. I'm a mechanical engineering technology student and was working on going through them with and Electrical Engineer and he was even slightly perplexed. Its frustrating because I know exactly what is happening, but can't figure out why. Something is giving a signal as always on because of the short, so as soon as I start up the car it overheats the circuit breaker, causing it to trip. There is constant power flowing to it, so therefore no resistance, and no reset. I tried unhooking the sunroof and mirrors to see if either of those could be doing it, but to no avail.
