Still Having Problems

Post by sweet89volvo740 »

Usually I try not to hammer on the car since it is old and has close to 200,000 miles. I had previous problems with the car as mentioned above but when i got it back a month ago, it has been running great until today. I was late for classes and so i was hammering on the car (I know i shouldn't). I get back from classes and it won't start again. It turned over for a few seconds till something popped for a quarter of a second and stopped turning over, then started turning over again but still didn't start. I did this a few times and finally it started. What is going on with this car? It has been to the mechanics twice already in the past couple months, Ive replaced the little black modual near the air box, the mechanics replaced the fuel sensor and did a complete tune up. It could be the fuel pump but when it hasn't started in the past i tapped the thing like crazy and could never get it to start. The weird popping has never happened before, does anyone know what that is? If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated, I know its not the best car to keep throwing money into but I can't afford anything newer.

all of this non-starting is sounding just like my problem with 940...anyone familiar with the shade tree approach on this? Do all volvos have 2 fuel pumps? thanks!

I've got a simlar problem, but my 89 740 will not start. We've had a great thread going on the brickboard website with lots of suggestions. First thing to do is run your diagnostic module. The Brickboard describes how to do it. Sounds like it could be a crank position sensor, which causes crapping out whne the car heats up, or a relay. Check it out: http://brickboard.com/ and go to the 700/900 forum or just go directly to http://brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=918069. But definitley check out the 700/900 FAQ.

This'll get you back on the road!
