1992 240 Airbag/Safety Systems

Post by Guazzo »

I know I risk ridicule on this site but forgive me for planning to smash up a running Volvo!!

I have aquired a 1992 240 (gas powered 4 cylinder (for free!!)) that I plan to use in an upcoming demolition derby...................Now before you lose your minds, the car runs, but that's about it, it is WAY past putting back on the highway.
okay.....laughs aside..... I need some advice on the safety systems. I have successfully removed the airbag and safely detonated it, which was really cool by the way! However, the thought occurs to me that there may be lurking somewhere a hidden system that might shut off the fuel system and/or igintion system of the car when it senses a jolt that should have blown the airbag???
I have talked to my mechanic who didn't think so, but he directed me to a long established Volvo dealer. The Dealer maintenace shop didn't think there was such a system, but they told me to find a message board on the internet because you guys were the true experts.
So, any advice/warnings/name calling for me? Thanks so much. P.S. I am a Volvo virgin in this arena on two counts: 1) I've never owned a Volvo, and 2) I've never been in a demolition derby!

Thanks guys.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
I am a Volvo virgin in this arena on two counts: 1) I've never owned a Volvo, and 2) I've never been in a demolition derby!
You are also very brave asking Volvo lovers to help you to destroy a Volvo.

The airbag is activated by a crash sensor under the driver's seat and basically all it does is to decide if a collision is severe enough to deploy the air bag. The only other safety item that may be fitted would be a fuel cut-off if the car were to roll. If you've gone that far you don't need to worry in a demolition derby.

Good luck in the derby. You have picked a car that will do its utmost to protect you.

Bill.

P.S. Of course you may have acquired one of the five 240s made in 1992 that were designed to shoot the driver if he was in a collision, but that is another story.

Ha. I'll make sure to put on my Kevlar vest in case the car puts me in its sites!

Thanks for the info. I am sure the Volvo will protect me well. Hopefully I can last long enough to have some fun at the derby. If I do well enough to win a prize I'll send the photo of the car into the site.

Sit on the Kevlar vest as I seem to remember the weapon is mounted under the seat.

Good luck.

Bill.
