can't turn ignition key

Hi, all,

I put the key in the ignition and it won't turn.

The transmission is in Park

I can't shift out of park.

I've jiggled everything I can and nothing happens.

Any suggestions?

Sometimes the steering lock can make it difficult to turn the key. Hold the steering wheel off the steering stop and try turning they key. Also, tried a different key?

djohn111, welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

I agree with the above tip as that is the most common reason for not being able to turn the ignition key.

However, if that doesn't work a locksmith told me recently that the most used lock on a car is the ignition lock and it is the one that usually doesn't get lubricated at a service. Put a small amount of oil on the key and slide it in and out of the ignition a couple of times. If it still doesn't turn remove the shroud at the top of the steering column to expose the lock. Have someone hold the steering wheel off the steering stop whilst you gently tap the side of the lock with a small hammer turning the key at the same time. This was as he was releasing the ignition lock on a friend's Land Rover.
