Welcome to MVS HML,
You need to start by checking the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. A quick and dirty way to do it is to use a tire gauge if you don't have a fuel pressure gauge. The test is made at the schrader valve on the end of the fuel rail. It should be around 44 PSI.
Fuel pumps normally fail in an all or nothing manner. The fuel pump relay does tend to fail in an intermittent fashion like you describe though.
If you don't have fuel pressure you can try to jumper the fuel pump relay. It is relay 103 and it is located under the cover of the fuse box. The relay has 4 pins and the pin numbers are molded into the base next to each pin. The numbers are 31, 31b, 15 and 87. Jumper the socket positions associated with pins 15 and 87. If the car starts and runs with the relay jumpered the the relay either needs to be replaced or repaired.
If you have no fuel pressure with the relay jumpered then the pump itself is likely bad.

Thanks, for the quick reply and my apologies with my slow follow up. I did the test at the Schrader valve, no pressure. I changed out the relay for a working one, no pressure. I listened for the prime noise, nothing. So, the fuel pump seems to be the culprit?

The fuel pump indeed. Most people just change the guts out with a Walbro kit. JHEIII874T5M over on Volvospeed sells the replacement kits.I listened for the prime noise, nothing. So, the fuel pump seems to be the culprit?

Hi, I'm new to the forum but found this thread matches a situation I have with a '94 850 Turbo.
Wanted to share some information on a source for a fuel pump..
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/1080305488.html
He's a real nice guy named Rusty Cohn, his website is http://www.rprusa.com and he'll take calls and his prices are very reasonable.
regards,
pagarb

That guy took two weeks to get me the pump his pay pal/bank connection wasn't working. He sent just the pump alone for $90, he told me there were no such things as kits I need a Walbro pick up filter. I can' find one locally.Ozark Lee wrote:The fuel pump indeed. Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. I've never used him as I've not yet had a pump fail. The guys over on VS always raved about him and that is why I made the recommendation. Thanks for letting me know so that I don't make that recommendation any more. That guy took two weeks to get me the pump his pay pal/bank connection wasn't working.
