EGR system Diagram for 1983 240 DL with B21A engine.

Post by sergitin32 »

Hi there... I've been checking the Haynes manual and the EGR system diagrams there are not so clear for the carburetor engines like my B21A, then some how I've noticed I have one of the vacuum amplifier connections without anything, neither hose or plugged... Been looking on Google etc with not luck.

Could some one with more information about this please get me some clearer diagram so I am sure my EGR system is working 100%? please.

Thanx lots for reading and cooperating with human understanding.

have a good day.

I have no experience of the EGR system on a 240 as Volvo didn't think we in the UK needed such luxuries The only diagram I have is the parts diagram from VADIS so I hope that helps.

Yes, that's a good one, since the more alike in Hayne's is actually a schematic and says schematic for typical EGR system... and its a little bit different.

This one matches my engine an I can see there is a nipple extra in the "fender side" of the vacuum amplifier, its just not very clear in any scheme which one should be the empty one. the upper one or the posterior one in the triangle?

Anyway, I've been looking this diagram and the schematics and diagrams for Hayne's I have got an overall idea and I am pretty much decided bout what to do; Seams the Vac-Amp should have the letters V for "venturi" (I think is the upper one) and S for "Spark advance" somewhere in that side, then luckily I'd be able to read those and put the hoses... or leave them as they are if they are ok already.

Great! One more time you got the right answer Bill, awesome.
take care.

Long PS: As for update you about how the car is doing, I can say pretty awesome, I just went for some try/error yesterday to make the carb as lean as possible and then from there on driving and adjusting I looked for the point when is drivable even in the cold weather we still having. Also I discovered there is some small leak in the lower gasket of the carb, so I order a carb repair kit which might come in today. Also and as usual been kinda stupid I had never realized the car actually takes premium gas (91) to work properly, so i was saving the bucks and putting the medium, yesterday filled with premium after the adjustment and was so much better, Then the rest is the usual you know, keeping the eye on every fluid, power steering keeps leaking so I keep refilling. Checking the timing, these days I might have a look at the valve clearance to check they keep it right... and I've been giving some thought to take the whole intake manifold off and try to some how machining it a little so its even enough to me, cuz I keep suspecting of some intake leak through one of the corners of the last cylinder intake...
I also change the kick down cable and it was an awfully long job, so hard to get to the cable end, I spent almost 11 hours to do so! but the new one is great and working perfectly. Change the fluid and shifting is smoother now too.

Among other changes I've been overhauling everything i can think off, got my EGR system working and that has allowed me to pass the Air Care inspections two years in a row with no prob at all, new plugs, cables, rotor and cap for the distributor, checked the plugs the other day and they look soooo clean i was very happy to see so.
So only thing I am missing ti overhaul (again) is the carb, new gaskets, readjust the floaters height, etc... By the way I got a new carb, since i had moved way too many adjustments in the original one , so I kept mine for parts and this one just move the needle and the floaters, the rest I don't touch them.

Took the tank for a ride today taking the family to do stuff around and even super cold, didn't stall nor hesitate too much t anytime, cross my finger, touch wood and pray for a couple minutes.

Also put some new tires since the old ones had been there for around 6 to 7 years included two years parked.

That's about it, maybe some more stuff, I am very happy keeping it running, some how cheap and keeping me busy doing what I like to do with this old buddy 240DL.

cheers :)

Thank you for the update on both cars. It is good to know that the old tank is still going strong. With all old cars there is always something to fiddle with but when you can do it yourself it makes life a lot more interesting.

Happy motoring.
