It was suggested that I make a sticky about the XeMODeX, non-contacting alternative to the Volvo ETM. This is a thread to find how who had had it done and some other information. Please give the following in the thread that follows:

ETM replaced? Yes
How Many times? i think once before
Mileage ETM installed? 161,000
ETM removed in less than 10 minutes, this is where the debate will come in(thats for another thread). i never remove the fan, i unbolt the intercooler pipe, all the connector plugs, and the 7mm bolt that holds the clamp for the charge pipe onto the ETM. 20 minute reinstall.
tools: 7mm, 12mm
time: in and out 30 minutes tops for me. ETM removed 4x's before.
EDIT: i have since logged almost 23k on this ETM with my 99 XC70. I Sold the car at 174k and installed a 90k ETM from my 01 C70 that did not show any problems. Now the XeMoDeX ETM is in my 01 C70. Its been in there for another 2k and running great as it was in my XC70.

No ETS light (it went on at 138k and dealer installed the ETM SW update and it went off). Car began recently running very unevenly between 1.5 and 2.0k RPM and started undershooting 850 when stopping. Checked the other likely suspects and concluded it was most likely the ETM. The behavior disappeared immediately after the new ETM was put in. Did the job myself. Was moderately challenging. Getting the fan out is a must, and that was a tight squeeze, to say the least. Could not get the charge tube back on the throttle with out warming that end up a bit first with a hair dryer to make it a little more flexible. Was a cold day. After that, was not so bad... Note: It may take you 4 days in some cases from start to finish instead of 3. Get a FedEx tracking # and watch it. If it says 'Clearance Delay', call FedEx customer service. They need more info from you to get it through return customs and you'll probably then get it the next day.

Just purchased the car last month, had a 96 850 until I broke the timing belt at 180k (shoulda done that service!). Beautiful new car, but noticed the hesitation/surge coming off idle and a few times when stopping. I have a TriCAN OBD scanner, hooked it up and found the throttle position sensor was spiking. Thought it was no big deal to change, till I called Volvo and found out they wanted $850 just for the part. After I finished panicking, I checked out the forum and found out a LOT of information on ETS. Thanks to everyone who's contributed to this, in particular Don Wilson, for all the countless hours you've spent on this problem.
Armed with all this info, the local repair shop, J&H Auto in Tehachapi, had the non-Volvo repairs performed, and so far so good. Costs to ship to Canada brought the repair up to near part-only costs from Volvo, but still money well spent. Not a trace of the original problem, will post if anything happens. Still a few minor (I hope) issues to work through, some shifting oddities, headlamp condensation, etc but, hey, that's what keeps forums interesting...

Since you have an '01, I can't believe they the dealer didn't honor the 10 year warranty. But you made a good choice with the XeMODex!

Actually, I never pursued the dealer option. Thanks to the information you provided, I figured the best thing was to bite the bullet and get it done right. I'm very disappointed in Volvo's decision to "band-aid" the problem, it really puts a stinking black mark on their safety reputation. A shame.
Film pots have been used in industrial instrumentation for a while, and they're great for machines that don't move a lot. But definitely a poor engineering choice for high-cycle equipment like this. The motor actuators we use for large dampers used film pots, but failed in exactly the same way after too many cycles. They were replaced years ago with the same contactless position sensor technology.
Why can't Volvo figure this out? Scrap those OEM units and replace their stock with the right stuff! And get rid of that useless software patch, I want to KNOW when something's not right.

ETM replaced? Yes
How Many times? Once prior to XeMODex
Mileage ETMs installed: <100,000(1'st), 199,000 (XeMODex)
FedEx'ed ETM Monday afternoon to XeMODex ($95). They received it Tuesday morning, performed the upgrade the same day and FedEx'ed it out Tuesday afternoon. ETM arrived back around noon today (Wed) ($599 Can). Two day turnaround time!! Installed this evening (15 minutes). Idle is now smooth as silk. Was bouncing before. Drove around the neighborhood a little bit. Everything appears to be fine! Most excellent!! I'll give it a more thorough test drive tomorrow.
Prior symptoms: ETS light started coming on occasionally about 2K miles ago. Took it to Volvo. Mileage under 200K but out of warranty by a couple of months. Had software upgrade. Told them to leave throttle alone. After software upgrade ETS light stayed off but still performance symptoms like bouncing idle and occasional konk while coming to a stop. Cruise control still occasionly cut out (simultaneously with the ETS light coming on before the software upgrade).

At ETM replacement + 300 miles my CEL came on. Code read was P0172 (Engine too rich). I'll be checking my air intake hoses and ETM gasket this weekend to make sure everything is properly sealed. If still a problem I'll look into the MAF sensor.
Here is the captured OBDII frame data:
Fuel Sys 1 CL
Calc LOAD 27.4 %
ECT (F) 208
STFT B1 -4.6%
LTFT B1 -23.4% (at max lean rail)
MAP (in Hg) 8.5
RPM 850
Speed mPh 0
---------------------------------------------------------------
Update - Found the problem!!
On the BACK/UNDERSIDE of the big air intake hose, near the throttle end there is a hard to see (on my S70) 3/4" hose nipple! This nipple had pulled out of the hose it was inserted into when I replaced the ETM. The throttle's been sucking mucho unmetered air thru this hole. Once I re-attached everthing the STFT immediately went max rich and the LTFT started its long march into less negative territory. Why unmetered air makes the fuel system rich is one of those Volvo mysteries others have also spoken of here.

Xemodex installed
Vehicle: S80
Year:2000
current Mileage: 112,000
ETM replaced? Y? (got it with a yellow sticker, no info)
How Many times? no data
I had the software recall thing done about 2 weeks ago after my wife was stranded from a bad throttle / ETM, it wouldn't run enough to limp anywhere. The Xemodex upgrade is piece of mind, since all I have read about is how many oem ETM some of you have installed. $500 is high, but, so is a tow bill and parts from the dealer.
