Exhaust Tip

Post by glockyman »

I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but my tailpipe is rusting and pitting away. The actual exhaust system itself is fine, but the endpipe that screws on is just going to hell. Yesterday, i jacked up one side of the car and used a 9mm wrench to unscrew it. It took lots of WD-40, and some serious pulling, but i finally pulled out this screw that was literally rotting away. Then I had to smack the tailpipe with a mallet to loosen the rust, and yanked it off. It was completely covered, inside and out with rust and exhaust buildup. I spent about 2 hours with a drill-powered wire brush, taking the rust off. I ended up with a fairly clean pipe, but it's got a few rust holes in it. My real trouble came when I started to lock it back in with the screw. I couldnt find the screw hole in the main piping. After some searching, I realized that the screw had broken when I unscrewed it. So I tightened the screw as much as I could against the pipe, and prayed for the best. The tip isnt going to come off, because it's tight enough to stay on, but I need some help in what to do. Should I just get a new tip, or just a new screw? Is it alright that I wire-brushed all the rust off?

That bolt is just a clamp fit.

I put an oval S70 tip on my wagon when the round one rusted out. Looks good. 8)
