Hi there,
I have a 1999 S80 2.4 automatic.
At the back end of last year, the car failed to start one evening. A visit from the AA man and a jump start saw the car going. No more problems til the end of January this year, when I drove to my fathers house (about 30 miles away), got back in the car 10 minutes later and again nothing from the starter motor. I charged the battery overnight and again all was well.
This Saturday morning I had the same problem. However, charging the battery overnight saw no improvement. I have now replaced the battery and starter motor. The car fails to turnover, everything works on the dashboard, the radio and everything else works, there is a high pitched sound from the engine bay and the car won't turnover.
Any suggestions?????

Welcome to MVS.
Have you checked that you have fuel pressure?
Could be a fuel pump or fuel pump relay.

Could be that the starter is not engaging. The high pitched sound could be the motor turning. The bendix might be bad, it could be the wrong starter for your car, or teeth might be broken off the flywheel. Can you bump the engine over a few degrees with a wrench on the crankshaft bolt or by pulling on the belt? If the starter then engages, you probably have broken flywheel teeth. Also, you could try putting the old starter back on and see if it turns over then.tonyb69 wrote: This Saturday morning I had the same problem. Heres the latest.
Replaced both the battery and starter motor, still nothing.
Checked the voltage. Battery before ignition - 12.48v, no real change when the key is turned. At the starter motor 0.19v before the ignition key is turned, drops to zero when the key is turned.
There is a high pitched noise I believe from the selector switch on the gearbox when there is an attempt to start the car. The relay clicks as I attempt to start the car.
Any ideas????

Take the relay out and test it or replace it.
