xc70 2001 Leaking Oil

Post by Deane543619 »

Hi, I have just bought a 2001 XC 70 with 117,000 miles. Condition is excellent and it has been well looked after by two previous owners. However, I have noticed oil dripping from beneath the back of the engine bay and it seems to have lost around 2 litres of oil in the last 7 days. I am not a mechanic although I get my cars serviced by a former Saab Mechanic. Before I contact him I wanted to get an idea of what the problem could be.

Cheers

Welcome to MVS.
Let's hope it's not a rear main seal leak.
The common ones (and cheap however) are the turbo, oil return line and rear cam shaft seal.

Thank you, I will let you know what it turns out to be. Dare I ask how serious a rear main seal leak would be?

Yes, you may dare ask:
The engine with transmission has to be lowered to split the two apart to change out a very inexpensive seal- it's typically a 10 hour job- so figure your labor costs at the dealer if you go there or at an indy mechanic if he's cheaper- still very expensive. If it's a rear main seal leak, get them to check your PCV system- it probably needs cleaning or replacing as when it's clogged and there's positive pressure in your engine, this is the main cause of that leak....you want to fix the PCV so this doesn't happen again.

Volvo specialist found sump bolt had no washer and was leaking a fair amount of oil. Oil cooler was also leaking. Both have been fixed. Will see if I continue to lose oil.

Thanks for the help

Turbo oil pipe was also leaking. This seems to have resolved it.

Hello, 7 months have passed since you found the oil leaks. Are you still leak free? George
