Rpm at 70

Post by toddv850glt »

I have a 95 850 glt 5 spd. and at 70 the rpms are at 3000-3200 rpms. Is that where it is suppose to be or do I have a trans problem? The most I have been able to get out of a tank of gas with those rpms is 340 miles in the city. New volvo owner so still asking alot of questions.

I have an automatic but I have to believe that the final drive is supposed to be about the same. My RPM at 70 is around 2600.
How many miles? Clutch slippage perhaps?

No clutch slippage it grabs and hold strong. I think I have 155xxx miles cause I fixed the odometer and then grabbed the codes from the computer after I was done and haven't had a chance to correct it.

340 city miles, if it's true city driving, isn't that bad. I believe it's rated at 18/26.

I know that this is not an entirely fair comparison, but my 2.5 10v GLT auto box did 70 mph at 2500 rpm and 55 mph at 2000 rpm and tick-over at 900 rpm, mpg was in the region of 30 in or out of town. Sounds to me like yours is about spot on.

Apologies, I read your post again, at 3000 to 3200 at 70 mph, your car is over-revving, my figures will be a guide only, though the exact figures should be available somewhere.

Yea, rpm's sound high.

My 4-sp auto does 83mph-ish at 3k rpm.

What size are your tires? Small tires can cause that.

5 speed + N/A's have a different gear ratios. They work hard on the highway, I'd imagine even more RPMs than the auto N/A. Most manuals with small engines are designed like that - it puts you in the cars "sweet spot" for engine power at highway speed without having to downshift.

Our 96 does 70mph at 2800rpm. 5 speed manual. 5th gear does feel too short. It is what it is.
Ambitious but rubbish
