Replacing electronic computer module

Post by novavolvo »

Hi, I am out town and my car broke down, The repair shop(firestone) told me I need a new ECM. I called my mechanic and he said it is highly unlikely the ecm went on my vehicle. 2001 s40. Does anyone have any thoughts. Everything was fine with my car until I stopped at a redlight. when I went to acclerate after lite turned green, my car did not move, engine didn't rev. I pumped the gas and the car slowly started to accelerate. After getting up to speed, there were no issues until I stopped again. Samething happened. Then I reached my destination. rev the motor a couple of times,no issues. When I went back to start car, it wouldn't start and I had it towed. help!!!

Welcome to MVS.
It really sounds like you've got a bad ground wire or some corrosion on your battery or it's just weak. Replace the ECM (ECU)? Nah.... they hardly ever fail- in fact, I've never heard of one failing on your model car- Consider the source- Firestone???? They know very little about Volvo's, much less your car. Did they even attempt to read your trouble codes from the OBD-II socket?

I do not know what they did or did not read. I am out of town so I did ask that they speak to my mechanic back home. They said the code was what it was and refused to say anything else to him. I do not think it would be the battery or battery cables. It did crank and crank but it would not turn over and start. The battery and battery power seemed fine. My mechanic said the samething you did about never hearing the ECM going on these. Any other thoughts. I am in the middle of having it towed to a volvo dealership(relunctantly)
