Should the ignition coil in a 1998 S70 be replaced regularly

Post by Dovetail »

Hello All
I have a 1998 S70 with 113,000 miles on it. I have gone through the car with new plugs/rotor/cap/wires, timing belt, water pump, tensioner, pulley... The car drives fine. What is the opinion on replacing the ignition coil as a purely preventive maintenance issue? When I drove beastly american cars from the 1960s and 1970s I routinely replaced the coil, as they were cheap. The Bosch coil for the Volvo is about $140, so I don't want to waste money. What is the opinion out there on 11 year old ignition coils? Thanks for your input, Will

Ive never seen one replaced! They are VERY VERY rare to ever fail and if they do a cheap used one is the best way.

Mine has a white powder along some seams. I'll try to get a picture. A mechanic told me it was caused by electricity "leaking", and that a short circuit was inevitable. I could prolong it's usefulness with some WD40.

Nice guy, been in the trade for 50 years. If I detect an issue in the rain, I'll look to the spray. Never been a problem, though.

Nah... Waste of good money. Coils generally work or they don't.
( In very rare instances, they may get funky, but You'll Know ! )
Spend that cash on getting to Stage zero or some kind of upgrade
like better headlight bulbs or a nice set of fan style windshield washer jets!
