2000 S70 Trasmission dip stick broken

Post by howie »

I had a shop flush my transmission last week and when I went to check my fluid level today I found that the dipstick was broken.

I cannot see the broken part in the tube, if the broken part is in the transmission will it hurt it?

Ummmm, yeah- not a good thing at all..actually might not clog things up, but I wouldn't want to take a chance. I would go back to where you got the service done and complain- let them fish it out if it's down in there. I believe the piece is plastic on your car, so it's going to be hard to get out...

Thanks, from browsing other forums there is a screen between the tube and tranny but I don't want to take any chances. What is the length the dipstick is supposed to be? I am going to make an interim model to make sure I am at lease running the right amount of tranny fluid.

I'm not an automotive superstar but my previous trade is biomedical engineering where zero failure is the goal, working on cars is hard for me because of this. I'm investing in a lift an tools and doing the working myself this kind of stuff is nauseating if I were a mech I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if this kid of stuff happened and I ignored it.

I think you would be remiss to try to just use something else to measure the fluid level (levels on it are specifically marked for cold and hot...one set of marks on one side of the stick for cold and on the other for hot . Btw, you always want to get a "true hot reading" after you've driven your car for at least 20 minutes and put it through each gear for several seconds at a time, and then into Park, with the engine running. I would get an exact replacement for what is broken (this shop should find the broken piece- whether in a garbage can at the shop or in the transmission and pay for your replacement). Volvo part #9495020 Oh, and as an after-thought, I sure hope they use JWS-3309 specified fluid for your flush- otherwise, you could start having transmission issues (if they use Dexron III as it's the incorrect fluid for your 5 speed auto).

Thanks, I am sure that they did use 3309 fluid, what is the exact measurement I should use to check the fluid level? I can use a large plastic zip tie to do this. How many millimeters is it from the neck if the tube to the cold/hot levels?

I have no idea...I suppose I could measure my S70's dipstick (but it's a '98 and uses Dex-III, so it could be different than yours). Any other 2000 model S70 owners out there willing to help?

I broke that dipstick off in my 850 while removing the intake manifold. I was able to fish out the broken piece with a pair of long nose needle nose pliers. I could see the end of it though but it was a reach. Not sure if your model is the same but I would suspect they are similar.

Can you see the broken part?
use a Claw Pick-up Tool?
try vacuum machine to suck it out?

It wont plug the screen/pick-up. It's massive! anyway, is it in the tube or is it in the bell housing? it shouldnt be in the bell housing since it wont fit so just remove the dipstick tube and take it out! done..
