2005 S60 Transmission dip stick and exhaust?

Post by asummers »

We have a 2005 S60, non-turbo, automatic. The transmission does not have a dip stick. Is this correct? Is this a "lifetime" transmission fluid, or what? There is also a vibration noise in the exhaust system when you start the car and when you accelerate from a stop (it sounds like metal vibrating). I looked at the heat shield but it didn't seem to be the source. There is also something that sounds like an acorn rolling inside the exhaust pipe. Could a piece of the catalytic converter have broken loose and be inside the exhaust pipe? Could the vibration noise be something wrong with the muffler?

My '05 turbo does, not sure if you have a different tranny. Kinda burried down in engine depths there... For the exhaust noise it sure sounds like a shield. I'd get under there and shake exhaust best you can to pinpoint.

Remove the plastic hose that goes from the top of the radiator to the airbox. Look below to find the lower radiator hose. Follow the rad hose from the rad to the motor. As the lower rad hose passes by the front of the trans you will see the little yellow dipstick. It is easier to find it the first time once the engine has cooled off.

As mentioned above, check for the tranny dipstick with cold engine, so you don't burn your hands.

The middle silencer has a protection plate that can rust on one side while still being attached on the other one, so it will rattle. Best is to grab a longer stick and with the engine running touch the exhaust shields under the car to locate the rattle. If the catalytic converter is broken inside, it can also rattle (can be replaced with a used one from a scrap yard).
