From the point that the dipstick enters the tube, measure as closely as possible the length to get to the center of the hot mark (and increments on each side of that) as well as the cold side- this should give him enough info to make his own dipstick if he chooses. I would just replace it off of an identical car at the car parts lot or get a new one from the dealer- how much could that little piece of plastic cost anyway?

I have a 2000 V70 that had the same problem (broken after transmission drain and fill at a sub-par shop). By it's design it is prone to breakage. The thickness tapers down and then gets larger so as to allow a second o ring gasket seal. It is prone to breaking around the deeper o ring. I was able to remove the broken piece with a thin pick which had a small angle at the tip. I have recently ordered the replacement part, and it cost $3.00 and some change. It was ordered from Tasca Auto group, which is an authorized Volvo dealer with outstanding prices. After having received the wrong parts on 2 seperate occasions from other suppliers I now exclusively deal with Tasca. BTW I am a physician and have no association with them. Good luck on retrieving the part. It should not be hard to remove.

The yellow dipstick on my car is
8 and 7/16 inches long

My car is a 2000 S270 with the 5 speed auto that uses the special 3309 fluid

Part number for the dip stick is
9495020 (Made in Japan)

It lists at my local dealer for $4.71

Probably not worth making your own, just go out and buy a new one.

One more quick question I am going to take the dipstick tube out to hopefully recover the broken dipstick are there any gaskets or O-rings I should have handy or need replacement while I am in there?

there is an 0-ring where the tube enters the transmission- make sure you get that out with the tube, but I would think it's okay...clean it and rub a light coat of vaseline on it before reinserting.

Old thread I KNOW BUT....

I did this too. Dip-stick tube is removable. I have a 1999MY V70 PI. Uses the Toyota type fluid.

Part number for the dip stick is
9495020

Got the tube off, but found had i left the broken section in there it would have done no harm. The casting has a stop-end so it would not have got any furhter anyway. If I did it again, I'd just buy a new stick, and leave the old in there. My stick is the later type see pic.

If you push a tie-wrap in there, you see it comes to a stop. You can't force it furher if you try.

NOTE: about thsi tiem the stick changes, I have the newer stick. 850 and early v70s have a differnt stick and tube. Can't say if this 'no harm' rule applies to those cars.
