Can I put: AC evap from 90' 740 turbo in my 89' 740 GL

Post by POsubVolvo »

I have a 89' 740 GL wagon that needs an AC evaporator. I have a "for parts" 90' 740 Turbo Wagon I pick up really cheap that ran great before it was parked (for 5 yrs) because of front end and rear end body damage. I want to pull the evaporator from it before the GA summers get too hot. Is this feasible? I know it is located under the passenger side dash and have print outs of what it looks like. I would consider my husband a very good back yard mechanic who has an extensive understanding of electronics. Is this something we can do ourselves? I am not afraid to pull or install it myself or to do the pre-work for my husband to complete it but we would need a step by step since there is nothing in our Chiltons manual.

It is possible but before going into 'how to do it' which heating systems are fitted to the two cars? There is a choice of manual or auto controls. The evaporators are the same but the removal instructions are slightly different.

How can I tell? The 90' has round dial controls to the AC/Heat and the 89' has a round dial to turn on the blower fan and a Bar style sliding to control the heat temp. I've begun taking under the dash apart in the 90 since my first post. Have both under dash foot well panels out. Have the radio, the tape deck & the cover to them all pulled. Can see lots of black plastic covered items (????) underneath the dash. In my search of your site I found a 20 page PDF: 1997 Volvo 850GLT how to to replace the AC evap. Don't know if its even useable for a 89'

The '90 has auto controls and the '89 has manual controls.

That .pdf is not relevant to the 740 which is much easier to do.

No problem. One wave of the magic cursor has consigned it to wherever unwanted posts go.

Anything behind or under the dash on the 850 requires the removal of the dash. This is not an impossible task but it is time consuming especially if all you want to do is replace an instrument panel bulb.

Don't hesitate to post if you need more info.
